At Someone's Home (Pool)

Level 3

Ma lähen sõbra poole means I am going to my friend's place. sõbra is the genitive of sõber.

How It Works

With a person in the genitive, these three words talk about that person's home (or where they live or work):

  • poole — to someone's place: Ma lähen sõbra poole.
  • pool — at someone's place: Ta on vanaema pool.
  • poolt — from someone's place: Tulin õe poolt.

Pronouns use their genitive forms: Tule minu poole! (Come over to my place!) Meie pool can also mean "where we live": Meie pool sajab lund. (It is snowing where we are.)

The meaning is close to juurde, juures, juurest. pool is typical for homes and family: vanaema pool. juures is the neutral choice for any person, including a doctor or a teacher.

With a place or thing, poole means towards: Ta läks linna poole. (He went towards town.)

poolt has other meanings too. Ma olen selle poolt means "I am for it". In official texts, poolt is sometimes used to name who did something, but careful writers avoid it; see the poolt agent.
