-nud Form
The -nud form is built on the da-infinitive stem: elada → elanud, tulla → tulnud.
How It Works
The active past participle ends in -nud. It is the form you need for:
- the negative past: ma ei tulnud (I did not come)
- the perfect: ma olen tulnud (I have come)
- the pluperfect: ma olin tulnud (I had come)
Build it from the da-infinitive. Remove the ending -da, -ta or -a (for tulla, olla and panna, remove -la or -na), then add -nud:
- elada → elanud, õppida → õppinud, lugeda → lugenud
- vaadata → vaadanud, hakata → hakanud (these keep the weak grade of the da-infinitive)
- tulla → tulnud, olla → olnud, panna → pannud
- osta → ostnud, pesta → pesnud, öelda → öelnud
Some common verbs are irregular: minema → läinud, tegema → teinud, nägema → näinud, sööma → söönud, jooma → joonud, tooma → toonud. In casual speech the -u- is often dropped (tulnd, olnd), but write -nud.
Examples (5)

- Ta on kaks aastat Eestis elanud.

Common Mistakes
Building -nud from the simple past stem.
Ta ei läksnud tööle.Ta ei läinud tööle.The -nud form of minema is läinud. It is not built from the past form läks.
Building -nud from the ma-infinitive.
Ma ei tulenud.Ma ei tulnud. The -nud form follows the da-infinitive tulla, so the form is tulnud.
Using the strong grade where the da-infinitive is weak.
Ma olen seda juba vaatanud.Ma olen seda juba vaadanud. The da-infinitive is vaadata, so the -nud form is vaadanud with d.
