Irregular Past Forms

Level 2

Minema uses a different stem in the past: läksin, läksid, läks. Sööma, jooma, tooma and lööma change oo or öö to õ: sõin, jõin, tõin, lõin.

How It Works

Minema (to go) has a different stem in the past. It follows the -si- endings, so the ta form ends in -s:

läksin, läksid, läks, läksime, läksite, läksid

A few short verbs whose stem has oo or öö take -i- and change that vowel to a short õ:

  • sööma (eat) → sõin, sõid, sõi, sõime, sõite, sõid
  • jooma (drink) → jõin, jõid, jõi, jõime, jõite, jõid
  • tooma (bring) → tõin, tõid, tõi
  • lööma (hit) → lõin, lõid, lõi

Also watch tegema and nägema. Their present tense is short (teen, näen), but the past has g: tegin, nägin. The -nud forms of these verbs are different again: läinud, söönud, joonud, toonud, teinud, näinud.

Be careful with jõin (I drank) and jooksin (I ran, from jooksma). They look alike but are different verbs.

Examples (5)

  1. Eile läksin varakult magama.

Yesterday I went to bed early.

    Minema → läksin.

  2. Ta läks poodi.

    He went to the shop.

    The ta form is läks.

  3. Me sõime hommikul putru.

We ate porridge in the morning.

    Sööma → sõime.

  4. Ma jõin liiga palju kohvi.

    I drank too much coffee.

    Jooma → jõin.

  5. Kas sa tõid leiba?

    Did you bring bread?

    Tooma → tõid.

Common Mistakes

  • Building the past of minema on its infinitive.

    Eile minesin kinno.
    Eile läksin kinno.

Minema has a separate past stem: läksin.

  • Keeping öö in the past of sööma.

    Ma söösin kooki.
    Ma sõin kooki.

In the past, öö changes to õ: sõin, sõi.

  • Confusing jõin (drank) with jooksin (ran).

    Ma jooksin tassi teed.
    Ma jõin tassi teed.

Jooksin is the past of jooksma (to run). The past of jooma (to drink) is jõin.
