siin / seal

Here and There

Level 1

siin means here and seal means there: Ma olen siin. (I am here.) Pood on seal. (The shop is over there.)

How It Works

siin and seal never change their form. They tell you where something is.

  • siin – here, near the speaker: Kas sa elad siin? (Do you live here?)
  • seal – there, further away: Seal on palju inimesi. (There are a lot of people there.)

Describing a place
siin and seal often start a sentence about what a place is like: Siin on väga ilus. (It is very beautiful here.)

Movement needs other words
Like kus – kuhu – kust, these words have three directions. You will learn them fully in Here, There and Direction:

  • where: siin / seal
  • to where: siia / sinna – Tule siia! (Come here!)
  • from where: siit / sealt

Good to know
On the phone, people introduce themselves with siin: Tere, siin Mari. (Hi, this is Mari.)

Common Mistakes

  • Using siin with a verb of movement.

    Tule siin!
    Tule siia!

Coming towards the speaker is movement, so the word is siia (to here), not siin.

  • Using seal with a verb of movement.

    Ma lähen seal.
    Ma lähen sinna.

Going somewhere needs the "to there" form sinna.
