Programm on mõeldud eelkõige noortele means the programme is meant above all for young people. These words guide the reader through a formal text.

How It Works

Formal writing connects its ideas with small linking words. Here are the most useful ones and what each does.

  • seejuures (also sealjuures): at the same time, while doing so. Meie eesmärk on kulusid vähendada, seejuures kvaliteeti langetamata.
  • muu hulgas (also written muuhulgas, short mh): among other things. Koosolekul arutati muu hulgas uue kooli ehitamist.
  • teisisõnu: in other words. It restates the idea more simply. It comes from an old case form, teisi sõnu.
  • eelkõige (also eeskätt, ennekõike): above all, mainly.
  • lisaks (sellele), samuti: in addition, also.
  • seevastu: in contrast. Linnas on palju töökohti, maal seevastu vähe.

Word order. When a marker starts the sentence, the verb usually comes next: Teisisõnu jääme me hiljaks.

Do not mix up meanings. seejuures does not mean therefore; use seetõttu or seega. muu hulgas does not mean by the way; use muide.

  6. Linnas on palju töökohti, maal seevastu vähe.

    There are many jobs in the city, whereas in the countryside there are few.

Common Mistakes

  • Using seejuures to mean therefore.

    Rong hilines, seejuures jäin koosolekule hiljaks. (meaning: so I was late)
    Rong hilines, seetõttu jäin koosolekule hiljaks.

    seejuures adds a detail that is true at the same time. For a result, use seetõttu or seega.

  • Using muu hulgas to mean by the way.

    Muu hulgas, kas sa homme tuled? (meaning: by the way)
    Muide, kas sa homme tuled?

    muu hulgas means among other things. To change the subject, say muide.
