kusjuures
Adding a Detail (Kusjuures)
Ta sai selle töö, kusjuures tal polnud mingit kogemust means She got the job, and she had no experience at all.
How It Works
Kusjuures joins a second clause that adds a detail to the first one. English often says and, while, and what is more or and at that.
- A plain detail: Meil on kaks last, kusjuures mõlemad on sündinud jaanuaris. (We have two children, and both were born in January.)
- A surprising detail: Ta sai selle töö, kusjuures tal polnud mingit kogemust. (She got the job, and she had no experience at all.)
Comma. When kusjuures joins a clause, it always has a comma before it.
Similar words. Misjuures means the same. Seejuures and sealjuures are close in meaning and are common in formal writing.
In speech. Kusjuures can also add a side remark inside a sentence, like by the way or actually: See kohvik on kusjuures päris odav. (This café is actually pretty cheap.) Speakers sometimes start a new sentence with it too.
Not the same as kus. Kus means where. Kusjuures never means where: Maja, kus ma sündisin. (The house where I was born.)
