ka

Also (Ka)

Level 1

ka means also or too: Mina tulen ka. (I am coming too.)

How It Works

Where ka goes

ka points to one word in the sentence. It usually stands right before that word, and in everyday speech often right after it:

  • Ka mina tulen. or Mina ka tulen. (I am coming too. Someone else is coming, and so am I.)
  • Ta räägib ka vene keelt. (She speaks Russian too. She speaks other languages, and Russian as well.)

In a short sentence, ka often comes at the end: Mina tulen ka. Use the full pronoun mina when the person is the new information, not the short ma (see Personal Pronouns).

Short replies

  • Mina ka! (Me too!)
  • Head päeva! – Teile ka! (Have a nice day! – You too!)

Negative sentences. In a negative sentence, ka means either and goes before ei: Mina ka ei tea. (I do not know either.) The short reply is Mina ka mitte. (Me neither.) See Not Either.

Other uses. ka can also mean even: Seda teab ka laps. (Even a child knows that.) The ending -gi/-ki can do the same job as ka: minagi (me too). In speech, ka is also a friendly filler word, as in Tere ka!

Examples (6)

  1. Ka mina tulen.

    I am coming too.

ka stands before mina, the word it adds.

  2. Mina tulen ka.

    I am coming too.

At the end of a short sentence, ka is very common.

  3. Ta räägib ka vene keelt.

    She also speaks Russian.

Here ka adds vene keelt: Russian as well as other languages.

  4. Kas sa tuled ka?

    Are you coming too?

  5. Head päeva! – Teile ka!

Have a nice day! – You too!

  6. Mina ka ei tea.

    I do not know either.

In a negative sentence, ka goes before ei.

Common Mistakes

  • Agreeing with a negative sentence using Mina ka.

Ma ei joo kohvi. – Mina ka.
Ma ei joo kohvi. – Mina ka mitte.

On its own, Mina ka means me too and agrees with a positive statement. To agree with a negative, say Mina ka mitte (Me neither).
