Letters ĉ, ĝ, ĵ and ŝ

The Letters Ĉ, Ĝ, Ĵ and Ŝ

Foundations

Each hat letter has a sound of its own.

How It Works

The hat letters have sounds of their own, different from c, g, s and j.

LetterSounds likeExample
ĉch in churchĉu (question word)
ĝj in jamĝardeno (garden)
ĵs in measureĵurnalo (newspaper)
ŝsh in shoeŝuo (shoe)

Learn them as pairs. Say ĉ, then say ĝ with your voice switched on: the mouth does the same thing. Say ŝ, then say ĵ with your voice switched on. Keep the four apart, because swapping one letter can change the word: ĝi means it, and ŝi means she.
