Everyday Kabul Speech: ره for the Object Marker

Level 3

ره sits in the same place as را, right after the whole object phrase.

How It Works

The little word را comes after a specific object. Friends in Kabul say it as ra and write it ره in messages.

Everyday speechWritten DariMeaning
کتاب ره خواندمکتاب را خواندمI read the book
دوستم ره دیدمدوستم را دیدمI saw my friend
نان ره خوردینان را خوردیyou ate the bread

ره goes after the whole object phrase, the same place as را. A phrase such as کتاب نو (a new book) takes it at the end: کتاب نو ره خواندم.

Iranian speech has a third form, رو. It does not belong in Dari. Dari writing uses را, and Kabul speech uses ره.

You will hear ره in the bazaar and in films, and you will read it in chats. In your own writing, use را.
