naj- + Comparative

The Highest Degree

Level 3

Attach naj- to the comparative as one word.

How It Works

Start with the comparative, then add naj-: mlađi → najmlađi, veći → najveći. Do not add naj- directly to the ordinary positive adjective when its comparative has a different stem.

Write the result together. When the comparative begins with j, both j letters remain, as in najjači. Gender, number and case still follow the noun.

The comparison group can be stated with a phrase such as u razredu or supplied by the conversation. A superlative is not the same as vrlo, which simply means very.

Examples (3)

  1. Ovo je najljepši park u gradu.

This is the most beautiful park in the city.

Najljepši identifies the highest degree within the city.

  2. Ana je najmlađa u obitelji.

Ana is the youngest in the family.

    Najmlađa has feminine agreement.

  3. On je najjači igrač.

    He is the strongest player.

Najjači retains the two j letters.
