Polite Vi Agreement
Respectful Singular Address
Croatian can address one person respectfully with vi. The verb takes plural agreement, just as it does when addressing several people.
How It Works
Ask Govorite li hrvatski? when addressing someone respectfully. The -te form is plural even if only one person is listening. Informal singular address instead uses govoriš.
In standard polite singular address, past active participles take masculine plural forms: Jeste li bili u Zagrebu? This applies whether the individual addressed is a man or a woman. Do not switch to singular bila merely because the addressee is a woman.
Capitalization is a writing convention, not a sound difference. A letter to one person may use Vi, Vas and Vam; a message to several readers uses vi, vas and vam. Keep the intended relationship and audience clear.
