Nouns Without Articles
Croatian has no article system corresponding directly to English a and the. A bare noun can refer to a new thing or to one already understood.
How It Works
Čitam knjigu. can mean “I am reading a book” or “I am reading the book,” depending on what the speakers already know. The Croatian noun phrase does not change solely because English chooses a different article.
A demonstrative can point to a particular item: Čitam ovu knjigu. A possessive can name a relationship: Čitam tvoju knjigu. Add those words when that pointing or possession is part of the meaning.
Jedan means one and can introduce an unspecified individual in some contexts. Do not insert it before every singular noun just because English uses a. Later adjective forms can also relate to definiteness, but they do not form a one-to-one replacement for the English article system.
