imati / nemati
Having and Not Having
Imati expresses possession and other have relationships. Its negative present is written as one word: nemam, nemaš, nema, nemamo, nemate, nemaju.
How It Works
Use imam with I, imaš with informal singular you and ima with a third-person singular subject. The plural forms are imamo, imate, imaju.
For the negative, use nemam, nemaš, nema, nemamo, nemate, nemaju. These are established joined forms, unlike ordinary ne radim. Their spelling is not made by placing a space between ne and imam.
Imati also appears in idioms that differ from English, including age: Imam dvadeset godina. An existential ima such as Ovdje ima vode uses another construction. Learn the personal possession pattern here without assuming that every ima has an omitted he or she as subject.
