za + Accusative: Beneficiary

For Someone or Something

Level 2

Poklon za Anu means a gift for Ana. Vrijeme za odmor means time for a rest. Both phrases use an accusative complement after za.

How It Works

Ovo je za Anu. identifies the intended recipient. With a pronoun, use a full accusative form: Ovo je za tebe.

Other phrases name purpose or suitability: vrijeme za odmor, stolica za djecu. Modifiers belong to the accusative phrase too: poklon za moju sestru.

This construction is distinct from a bare dative recipient in Dajem Ani poklon. It is also distinct from instrumental za in a spatial phrase such as za kućom. Identify the intended relationship before choosing the case.
