Comparing How Actions Happen

Level 3

An adverb compares how an action happens.

How It Works

Compare Ana trči brže and Ivan trči brže. The comparative adverb remains brže because it describes running, not either person as a noun.

Many adverb comparatives resemble neuter adjective forms. Their grammatical job comes from the phrase: bolje pjevati describes an action, while bolje računalo describes a noun.

Not all adverbs have comparison forms. Location words such as ovdje do not gain a comparative just because manner adverbs can.

Examples (3)

  1. Ana trči brže od mene.

    Ana runs faster than me.

    Brže modifies trči.

  2. Sada bolje razumijem hrvatski.

    I understand Croatian better now.

Bolje compares the degree of understanding.

  3. Oni govore tiše.

    They speak more quietly.

Tiše stays unchanged with a plural subject.
