Aspect in Negative Statements
An imperfective negative can deny an activity or habit. A perfective negative can deny that a bounded event or result occurred.
How It Works
Nisam pisala poruku denies the writing activity in the relevant situation. Nisam napisala poruku denies producing the message as a bounded result; it may leave open whether an attempt began.
Time expressions narrow the reading: još nisam završila means the completion has not happened yet, while obično ne čitam navečer describes a habit. Neither aspect can be chosen purely because the English sentence contains “not.”
Distinguish ordinary negative statements from prohibitions and from modal meanings. Ne moraš završiti danas removes an obligation; it does not prohibit finishing today. Case changes sometimes associated with negation are another issue, separate from aspect.
