Still and No Longer

Все още means "still": Все още живее в Русе. Вече не means "no longer, not anymore": Вече не пуша.

How It Works

1. Все още: still. Use it for something that continues: Навън все още вали. (It's still raining outside.) It means the same as още, with a little more stress. See already, still and yet.

2. Вече не: no longer. Put вече first, then не and the verb, with any short pronouns between: Вече не пуша. (I don't smoke anymore.) Вече не го виждам. (I don't see him anymore.) See negation with не.

3. Still not. For something that has not happened yet, use все още не or още не: Все още не съм получил писмото. (I still haven't received the letter.)

4. Questions and short answers. Все още ли работиш в банката? (Do you still work at the bank?) Да, все още. (Yes, still.) Не, вече не. (No, not anymore.)

  • It continues: все още живее тук (he still lives here)
  • It has stopped: вече не живее тук (he no longer lives here)
  • It hasn't happened yet: все още не е дошъл (he still hasn't come)

Note: in relaxed speech you may hear Не пуша вече; the neutral order is Вече не пуша.

Common Mistakes

  • Using все още не to mean no longer.

    Все още не пуша.
    Вече не пуша.

    With the intended meaning "I no longer smoke", use вече не. Все още не пуша means "I still don't smoke", as if you never started.

  • Putting не before вече.

    Не вече пуша.
    Вече не пуша.

    Не must stand directly before the verb (or its short pronouns), so вече comes first.
