How Often

Level 2Sounds Like vinagi/često/ponâkoga/nikoga

Say how often you do something with винаги (always), често (often), понякога (sometimes), рядко (rarely) and никога не (never).

How It Works

1. The scale.

  • винаги (always) → обикновено (usually) → често (often) → понякога (sometimes) → рядко (rarely) → никога не (never)

2. Word order. The adverb usually comes right before the verb, or first in the sentence for emphasis:

  • Аз често ходя на кино. / Често ходя на кино. (I often go to the cinema.)

Short pronouns and се stay next to the verb: Винаги ми помагаш. (You always help me.)

3. Никога needs не. Bulgarian uses double negation (see negative words with не): Никога не пуша. (I never smoke.) In the future, use няма да: Никога няма да забравя. (I will never forget.) As a one-word answer, никога stands alone: Пушиш ли? — Никога.

4. Никога or някога? Някога means "ever" or "at some time", not "sometimes": Бил ли си някога в Пловдив? (Have you ever been to Plovdiv?) For "sometimes", say понякога.

5. Use the imperfective. A repeated action takes an imperfective verb: Често купувам плодове, not the perfective купя (see aspect).

Examples (6)

  1. Винаги пия кафе сутрин.

I always drink coffee in the morning.

  2. Често ходя на кино.

I often go to the cinema.

  3. Понякога готвя за приятели.

    Sometimes I cook for friends.

  4. Рядко гледам телевизия.

    I rarely watch television.

  5. Никога не пуша.

    I never smoke.

Никога goes together with не before the verb.

  6. Обикновено ставам в седем.

I usually get up at seven.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out не with никога.

    Никога пуша.
    Никога не пуша.

Bulgarian needs both the negative word and не before the verb. The double negative does not cancel out.

  • Using някога to mean "sometimes".

    Някога ходя на плуване.
    Понякога ходя на плуване.

Някога means "ever" or "once, at some time", so it does not describe a regular habit. The word for "sometimes" is понякога.

  • Using a perfective verb for a habit.

    Често купя плодове.
    Често купувам плодове.

A repeated action needs the imperfective verb. The perfective купя cannot be the main verb of a present-tense sentence.
