То works like English "then" after a condition: Ако това е вярно, то трябва да действаме. (If that is true, then we must act.)

How It Works

1. The shape.

  • Ако + condition, то + main clause
  • Ако това е вярно, то трябва да действаме. (If that is true, then we must act.)

The same sentence without то is equally correct: Ако това е вярно, трябва да действаме. The word only adds weight to the conclusion. See real conditions with ако.

2. Other opening clauses. То can also follow clauses with когато, щом and в случай че: Щом си решил, то няма какво повече да обсъждаме. (Since you have decided, then there is nothing more to discuss.)

3. Order and punctuation. То is possible only when the condition comes first. The comma goes before то, where the if-clause ends; no comma follows то. See commas before subordinate clauses.

4. Тогава in speech. In everyday speech, тогава (then) often fills the same place: Ако не ти харесва, тогава не го купувай. (If you don't like it, then don't buy it.)

5. Not the pronoun то. The neuter pronoun то (it) can stand in the same spot. In Ако детето плаче, то е гладно (If the child is crying, it is hungry), то can be read as the pronoun referring to детето. The correlative то refers to nothing; it only marks the start of the main clause.

  3. Щом си решил, то няма какво повече да обсъждаме.

    If the parcel does not arrive, then we will refund your money.

  5. Ако цената падне, то търсенето ще се увеличи.

    If the price falls, then demand will rise.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting то before a condition that comes second.

    То трябва да действаме, ако това е вярно.
    Ако това е вярно, то трябва да действаме.

    Correlative то answers a condition that has already been stated, so the if-clause must come first.

  • Adding a comma after то.

    Ако това е вярно, то, трябва да действаме.
    Ако това е вярно, то трябва да действаме.

    The only comma marks the end of the if-clause, before то. То itself is not set off.

  • Leaving out the comma before то.

    Ако това е вярно то трябва да действаме.
    Ако това е вярно, то трябва да действаме.

    The if-clause ends before то, and a comma separates it from the main clause.
