At Someone's Place with При

Use при + a person to say at someone's place or to someone: Живея при родителите си (I live with my parents).

How It Works

1. With people. При means you are with a person, at their home or where they work. The same word covers being there and going there:

  • Бях при зъболекаря. (I was at the dentist's.)
  • Отивам при баба. (I am going to Grandma's.)
  • Ела при мен! (Come over to me!)

With pronouns use the long forms: при мен (or при мене), при теб, при него, при нея, при нас, при тях. See full object pronouns.

2. With places. Here при means near, by, at: Чакам те при входа (I will wait for you at the entrance). It also appears in historical names: битката при Клокотница (the Battle of Klokotnitsa).

3. With situations. In instructions, signs and formal writing, при means in case of, during, under:

  • При пожар звънете на 112. (In case of fire, call 112.)
  • При нужда ще ти помогна. (If needed, I will help you.)
  • При тези условия не мога да работя. (I cannot work under these conditions.)

4. При or с? С means together with: Ходих на кино с Мария (I went to the cinema with Maria). При means at Maria's: Бях при Мария. To say you are in a city or inside a building, use в or на, not при.

    In bad weather the match is postponed.

Common Mistakes

  • Using в with a person.

    Живея в родителите си.
    Живея при родителите си.

    В is for places such as cities and buildings. To say at someone's home, use при.

  • Using на to go to a person.

    Ела на мен.
    Ела при мен.

    To say come to me or come over to my place, use при with the person.

  • Using при to mean together with.

    Отивам на кино при приятели.
    Отивам на кино с приятели.

    При means at someone's place. For doing something together with people, use с.
