Plurals in -ища
път → пътища, край → краища, сън → сънища. Learn these few words as a group.
How It Works
1. The words.
- път (road, way) → пътища, пътищата
- край (end, edge, region) → краища, краищата
- сън (dream, sleep) → сънища, сънищата
2. The article. Plurals ending in -а take -та, not -те: пътищата. See plural articles.
3. After numbers. With a number, use the count form instead: два пътя (two roads), двата края (both ends).
4. Път meaning 'time'. Път also means 'time' in the sense of 'occasion'. In that meaning the plural is пъти: два пъти (twice), много пъти (many times). So пътища is only for roads and ways.
5. Set phrases. Приятни сънища! (Sweet dreams!) В нашите краища means 'in our part of the country'.

After a number, път uses the count form пътя.

Краища here means 'regions' or 'parts'.

Hold the rope by both ends.
- Напоследък имам странни сънища.

Common Mistakes
Giving път the common plural ending -ове.
Пътовете са затворени заради снега.Пътищата са затворени заради снега.Път is one of the few nouns with the plural пътища.
Using пътища to mean 'times'.
Бях там три пътища.Бях там три пъти.When път means 'time' or 'occasion', its plural is пъти.
Adding the article -те to a plural that ends in -а.
Пътищите са нови.Пътищата са нови.Plurals ending in -а take the article -та: пътищата.
