Dubitative Forms
A reported form plus an extra бил means supposedly, but I doubt it: Той бил бил болен! (Supposedly he's ill — I don't believe it!)
How It Works
1. Building the forms. Start from the reported form and add бил (била, било, били). In the third person there is no е or са:
- Present and imperfect: reported той четял → dubitative той бил четял
- Aorist: reported тя писала → dubitative тя била писала
- The verb съм: reported той бил → dubitative той бил бил
- Future: reported щял да дойде → dubitative щял бил да дойде
- Negative future: нямало било да дойде (нямало било never changes)
In the first and second person, съм and си stay: Бил съм бил мързелив! (So I'm supposedly lazy!)
2. Meaning. The speaker quotes a claim and distances himself from it, often with sarcasm or indignation. The sentence is usually an exclamation and often a reply to what someone has just said: — Ще дойде утре. — Щял бил да дойде! Три пъти го обещава.
3. Compare the related forms.
- Той бил болен. Neutral report: I was told he is ill (преизказни форми в трето лице).
- Той бил бил болен! Doubting report: supposedly he is ill, but I don't buy it.
- Той бил болен, а! Surprise at something you have just learned (admirative use).
4. In practice. These forms belong to lively speech and are most common in the third person. A milder way to show doubt is уж with an ordinary or reported form: Уж бил болен.
Examples (6)
- Щял бил да дойде!
He is supposedly going to come — as if!
Future dubitative: щял + бил + да + present.
- Той бил бил болен!
Supposedly he's ill — I don't believe it!
The first бил is the reported form of съм; the second adds doubt.
- Бил съм бил мързелив! Кой го казва?
So I'm supposedly lazy! Who says so?
- Тя била писала домашното сама!
She supposedly wrote the homework herself — sure she did!
Both participles agree with тя.
- Нямало било да закъснее! А вече е девет.
He supposedly wasn't going to be late! And it's already nine.
- Били видели извънземни!
They supposedly saw aliens — yeah, right!
Common Mistakes
Using the doubting form when you only want to pass on news.
Казаха, че той бил бил болен, затова не дошъл.Казаха, че той бил болен, затова не дошъл.The extra бил tells the listener you do not believe the claim. For a neutral report, use the ordinary reported form with one бил.
Adding е in the third person.
Той е бил бил болен!Той бил бил болен!Dubitative forms are built on the reported forms, which drop е and са in the third person.
Forgetting agreement in the extra бил.
Тя бил била болна!Тя била била болна!Both participles agree with the subject: била била for a woman, били били for a plural subject.
