kroz, preko
Through and Across
Through and across use different cases.
How It Works
| word | case | example |
|---|---|---|
| kroz | accusative | kroz grad, kroz park |
| preko | genitive | preko mosta, preko rijeke |
Kroz goes through the inside of something: a city, a park, a window. Masculine nouns for things look the same in the accusative and the nominative. Masculine nouns for people and animals use the genitive form. Feminine nouns in -a end in -u: kroz šumu (through the forest).
Preko goes across or over something: a bridge, a river, a street. The noun is in the genitive: mosta, rijeke, ulice.
Preko can also mean more than: preko sto ljudi. It is also used for by way of, as in preko prijatelja (through a friend). So through in English can be kroz or preko, depending on the meaning.
