hvala / molim
Thanks and Please
Hvala is thank you; molim covers please, you are welcome and a polite what?
How It Works
Hvala is the everyday thank you. Hvala lijepa and hvala puno are warmer. With a friend you can add the name: Hvala, Amire.
Molim does several jobs:
- please: Jednu kafu, molim.
- you are welcome: Hvala! - Molim.
- a polite pardon: Molim? asks someone to say it again.
Another way to answer thanks is nema na čemu, which has its own lesson. When someone hands you something, they may use izvolite (here you are). You can answer hvala. In a shop or a cafe, a short hvala after you pay is always welcome, and the seller will often answer with molim or izvolite.
