općina / opština
Općina and Opština
Općina and opština are two accepted spellings of the same word.
How It Works
| In this course | Also accepted | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| općina | opština | municipality |
| uopće | uopšte | at all, in general |
| opći | opšti | general |
The first column keeps the Bosnian tradition, which writes pć. The second column has pšt. Critics of the 2017 and 2018 spelling guide say it brought these forms back, so both are in use and accepted. Which one a person uses may vary by place, writer or newspaper.
In Sarajevo, the names of the city districts use the first spelling: Općina Centar, Općina Stari Grad.
The two spellings sound different: općina has a ć and opština has št. You will hear and read both, so recognise the pattern: where the course writes ć, the other form has št.
Pick one set for your own writing and keep it the same through a text.
