Feminine Nouns Ending in a Consonant
These feminine nouns end in a consonant and take -i in most singular cases.
How It Works
Almost all feminine nouns end in -a, but a good handful end in a consonant. You must learn their gender: noć (night), stvar (thing), riječ (word), ljubav (love), pamet (mind).
| Case | Singular |
|---|---|
| nominative | noć |
| genitive | noći |
| dative | noći |
| accusative | noć |
| locative | noći |
The nominative plural is noći as well. The instrumental singular varies from word to word (noću, stvari, ljubavlju), so learn it with each noun.
Since the nominative looks like a masculine noun, check the gender in the dictionary and use feminine words around it: duga noć, ova stvar.
Examples (4)
- Noć je bila duga.
The night was long.
Noć is feminine, so the participle is bila.
- Došli smo usred noći.

- Imam jednu stvar za tebe.
I have one thing for you.
The accusative stvar looks like the nominative.

That is a beautiful word.
Lijepa agrees with feminine riječ.
Common Mistakes
