All the More Since

Level 6Sounds Like tym bolʹš što

(Stay, especially since it is raining.)

How It Works

Тым больш што adds a reason that makes a statement even more convincing. The main clause comes first, and the reason follows: Трэба выехаць раней, тым больш што дарогу рамантуюць. (We should leave earlier, especially since the road is being repaired.)

Compared with бо. Бо and таму што give the reason. Тым больш што gives an extra one, often after the main point already sounds reasonable: Кнігу варта прачытаць, тым больш што яна невялікая.

Word order and comma. The clause usually follows the main clause, with a comma before тым больш што. It never comes before its main clause, because it adds to something already said.

Тым больш alone. Without што it works as a reply or a particle: — Але ж ужо позна! ("But it is already late!" "All the more reason to hurry.")

Only for support. The reason must push in the same direction as the main clause. For a fact that works against it, use a concessive such as дарма што or хоць.

Common Mistakes

  • Using тым больш што for a fact that works against the main clause.

The intended meaning is I will go for a walk even though it is raining. Тым больш што adds a supporting reason, so a contrast needs хоць or дарма што.

  • Opening the sentence with тым больш што.

Тым больш што adds to something already said, so it follows the main clause.
