кожны

Each and Every with Кожны

Level 2Sounds Like kožny

Кожны means each or every and agrees with its noun: кожны дзень, кожная хвіліна, кожнае лета.

How It Works

1. Agreement. Кожны follows the adjective pattern: кожны дзень (masculine), кожная хвіліна (feminine), кожнае лета (neuter).

2. Time: every day, every morning. A time phrase with кожны is in the accusative. Masculine and neuter look unchanged (see inanimate accusative), but feminine takes -ую/-у (see feminine accusative): Кожную раніцу я п'ю каву (Every morning I drink coffee), кожную суботу (every Saturday).

3. Кожны on its own. It can stand alone and mean everyone: Кожны гэта ведае (Everyone knows that). Кожны з нас means each of us.

4. Plural кожныя. The plural appears with numbers: Аўтобус ходзіць кожныя дзесяць хвілін (The bus runs every ten minutes). To say all children, use усе дзеці, not кожныя.

Case forms. Like any adjective: кожнага, кожнаму, кожным; feminine кожнай.

We go to the sea every summer.

    Neuter лета: кожнае.

  4. Кожная хвіліна важная.

    Every minute matters.

Feminine хвіліна as the subject: кожная.

  5. Кожны з нас можа памыліцца.

Each of us can make a mistake.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the feminine form with a masculine noun.

    Кожная дзень я чытаю.
    Кожны дзень я чытаю.

Дзень is masculine, so the form is кожны.

  • Leaving a feminine time phrase in the nominative.

    Кожная раніцу я бегаю.
    Кожную раніцу я бегаю.

Time phrases with кожны are in the accusative, and feminine кожная becomes кожную to match раніцу.

  • Using кожныя when you mean All children love fairy tales.

    Кожныя дзеці любяць казкі.
    Усе дзеці любяць казкі.

Кожны goes with a singular noun. For all with a plural noun, use усе, or say кожнае дзіця.
