Formal verbs like дасягнуць and пазбягаць take the genitive: дасягнуць мэты (to reach a goal), пазбягаць памылак (to avoid mistakes).

How It Works

Many formal verbs about reaching, avoiding or demanding something take a genitive object:

  • дасягнуць / дасягаць (to reach, to achieve): дасягнуць мэты, дасягнуць поспеху
  • пазбягаць / пазбегнуць (to avoid): пазбягаць памылак, пазбягаць канфліктаў
  • патрабаваць (to demand, to require): патрабаваць увагі, патрабаваць адказу
  • дамагацца (to strive for, to seek): дамагацца праўды, дамагацца поспеху
  • пазбавіцца / пазбаўляцца (to get rid of): пазбавіцца звычкі

They extend the everyday group in verbs taking the genitive (баяцца, чакаць, прасіць). With патрабаваць, the person you demand something from takes ад: патрабаваць адказу ад улад.

Why this matters. English has a direct object here, so learners reach for the accusative. Дасягнуць мэту sounds wrong in Belarusian; say дасягнуць мэты. Learn the verb and the case as one unit.

Verbal nouns made from these verbs keep the genitive: дасягненне мэты, пазбяганне канфліктаў.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the accusative after дасягнуць.

    Каманда дасягнула мэту.
    Каманда дасягнула мэты.

    Дасягнуць takes the genitive: мэты, not мэту.

  • Using the accusative after пазбягаць.

    Трэба пазбягаць канфлікты.
    Трэба пазбягаць канфліктаў.

    Пазбягаць takes the genitive plural: канфліктаў.
