ды
The Conjunction Ды
Ды = and in set phrases (хлеб ды соль) and but after a comma: Хацеў прыйсці, ды не змог. (I wanted to come but could not.)
How It Works
1. Ды = і (and). It joins words or actions, often in fixed and folk phrases. No comma is needed:
- хлеб ды соль (bread and salt, the traditional welcome)
- Мы павячэралі ды пайшлі спаць. (We had supper and went to bed.)
- With a repeated verb it means the action keeps going: Дождж ідзе ды ідзе. (The rain keeps falling.)
2. Ды = але (but). It shows a contrast or a plan that did not work out. A comma comes before it: Хацеў прыйсці, ды не змог. Дарога доўгая, ды прыгожая. Neutral writing more often uses але.
3. Ды і (дый): and besides. It adds a further point or reason: Позна ўжо, ды і я стаміўся. (It is late, and besides, I am tired.)
4. As a particle. At the start of a sentence, ды adds emotion, a bit like oh or come on: Ды годзе ўжо! (Oh, that is enough!)
Not да. In Belarusian, да is a preposition meaning to or until. The conjunction is always ды. Writing хлеб да соль is a Russianism.
Compare і and а for plain joining and contrast.
