The Intensifier Аж

Level 6Sounds Like až

(We talked all the way until morning.)

How It Works

Аж is an intensifying particle. It stands right before the word it strengthens and says that something went further than expected.

  • Degree. A reaction so strong it shows: Ён аж пачырванеў ад сораму. (He even went red with shame.)
  • Distance and time. (They went all the way to Hrodna.)
  • Amount. A surprisingly large number: Я тэлефанаваў табе аж пяць разоў! (I called you five whole times!)
  • Result. After a strong action, аж introduces the effect: Ён так смяяўся, аж слёзы пацяклі. (He laughed so hard that tears ran down his face.)
  • Surprise. In stories it can mean and then, to my surprise: Думаў, гэта сусед, аж гэта ты!

Only for more. Аж points to a large amount or extreme. For a small amount, use толькі (only). And аж does not mean even in the sense of including: that is нават.

Аж is neutral in Belarusian and common in both speech and writing. Compare ледзь не (almost), which also describes an extreme that nearly happened.

Common Mistakes

The intended meaning is only two rubles are left. Аж makes an amount sound large, so a small amount needs толькі.

  • Using аж for even in the sense of including.

Нават includes something unexpected in a group (even children). Аж stresses how far or how much, so it does not fit here.
