etorria izango da

Will Have Done

Level 5

To say something will already be done at a point in the future, combine the participle with the future auxiliary: Ordurako etorria izango da (By then he will have arrived).

How It Works

1. The forms.

  • Participle + -a: etorria izango da, egina izango dut. The -a becomes -ak for a plural absolutive: etorriak izango dira, gutunak bidaliak izango ditugu.
  • Bare participle: etorri izango da, egin izango dut. This form is equally standard and very common, especially in speech.
  • With -ta, the West and centre prefer egon and eduki: bukatuta egongo da (it will be finished), as in egina dut, eginda daukat.

In the North, the future auxiliary is izanen: etorria izanen da. See Northern verb forms.

2. A time limit. The future perfect usually comes with a deadline: ordurako (by then), bihar goizerako (by tomorrow morning), urte amaierarako (by the end of the year), or a clause with -(e)nerako: Iristen zarenerako, afaria prestatua izango dugu.

3. A guess about the past. Like the future of probability, the bare form can mean "must have": Honezkero iritsi izango da (He must have arrived by now). Ahaztu egin zaio? Bai, ahaztu izango zaio (Has he forgotten? Yes, he must have forgotten).

4. Never with the future participle. The -ko/-go form is already future, so it does not combine with izango: say etorria izango da or etorri izango da, not etorriko izango da.

Tip: Look for a deadline word like ordurako. If the action will be finished before it, use the future perfect.

Examples (6)

  1. Ordurako etorria izango da.

By then he will have arrived.

  2. Bihar goizerako lana egina izango dut.

By tomorrow morning I will have finished the work.

  3. Iristen zarenerako, afaria prestatua izango dugu.

By the time you arrive, we will have made dinner.

  4. Ordurako gutunak bidaliak izango ditugu.

By then we will have sent the letters.

bidaliak and ditugu agree with the plural gutunak.

  5. Urte amaierarako, etxe berriak eginak izango dira.

By the end of the year, the new houses will have been built.

  6. Honezkero iritsi izango da.

He must have arrived by now.

With the bare participle, this is a guess about the past.

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting plural agreement on the participle.

    Ordurako lagunak etorria izango dira.
    Ordurako lagunak etorriak izango dira.

With -a, the participle agrees with the plural subject lagunak, so it becomes etorriak.

  • Using the future participle with izango.

    Ordurako etorriko izango da.
    Ordurako etorria izango da.

etorriko is already future. The future perfect uses the plain participle, with or without -a: etorria izango da or etorri izango da.
