batere / inola ere

Not at All

Level 5

Add batere to say not at all: Ez zait batere gustatzen (I don't like it at all). Say Inola ere ez! for no way, and Ezta pentsatu ere! for don't even think about it.

How It Works

1. batere.

  • With adjectives, adverbs and verbs: Ez da batere erraza. Ez zuen batere ongi entzun. Ez zait batere gustatzen.
  • With nouns, which take the partitive -(r)ik: Ez dut batere dirurik or Ez dut dirurik batere.
  • Alone, as an answer: Nekatuta zaude? Batere ez. (Are you tired? Not at all.)
  • In if clauses and questions, it means any at all: Batere astirik baduzu, deitu iezadazu (If you have any time at all, call me).

2. inola ere. It comes from nola and means in no way, by no means: Ez dut inola ere onartuko (There is no way I will accept it). It also goes with ezin: Ezin dut inola ere ulertu. As a short answer: Inola ere ez!

3. More strong negatives.

  • Ezta pentsatu ere!: Don't even think about it! No way! (built like ezta ... ere)
  • inondik inora ere ez: by no means
  • ezta hurrik eman ere: not even close
  • inoiz ez, sekula ez: never

Tip: If you use batere in a statement, make sure ez or ezin is in front of the verb.

Examples (6)

  1. Ez zait batere gustatzen.

I don't like it at all.

  2. Ez dut batere dirurik.

I have no money at all.

The noun takes -rik after batere.

  3. Ez da batere erraza.

    It isn't easy at all.

  4. Ez dut inola ere onartuko.

There is no way I will accept it.

  5. Utziko didazu autoa? Ezta pentsatu ere!

Will you lend me the car? Don't even think about it!

  6. Batere astirik baduzu, deitu iezadazu.

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting ez.

    Batere gustatzen zait.
    Ez zait batere gustatzen.

batere strengthens a negative. In a statement, the verb must still have ez in front of it.

  • Leaving the noun without -rik.

    Ez dut batere diru.
    Ez dut batere dirurik.

A noun that goes with batere takes the partitive: dirurik.
