nola

How (Nola)

Level 1

nola means "how": Nola zaude? (How are you?) Nola esaten da ... euskaraz? (How do you say ... in Basque?)

How It Works

nola asks how something is done or how someone is. It goes directly before the verb.

How are you? A state uses egon, so the question is Nola zaude? The answer uses egon too: Ondo nago. Another everyday way to ask is Zer moduz?.

How is it done?

  • Nola esaten da "thank you" euskaraz? (How do you say "thank you" in Basque?)
  • Nola joaten zara lanera? (How do you get to work?)
  • Nola idazten da zure abizena? (How is your surname spelled?)

Asking someone's name. A common way is Nola duzu izena?, literally "How do you have the name?". Zein da zure izena? is also correct.

nola or nolako? nola does not go before a noun. To ask "what kind of" or "what is it like", use nolako: Nolako etxea duzu? (What kind of house do you have?)
