لذلك / لذا
Therefore
لذلك (li-dhālika) and لذا (li-dhā) are formal connectors in Modern Standard Arabic used to introduce a result or consequence. They are the equivalent of 'therefore,' 'consequently,' or 'so' in English.
How It Works
In Modern Standard Arabic, logical flow is maintained through explicit connectors. لذلك, لهذا, لذا, and وبالتالي are the primary tools for expressing consequence.
- لذلك (li-dhalika): The most common form. It literally means 'for that [reason].' It is a fixed masculine singular expression using the distal demonstrative ذلك.
- لهذا (li-hadha): The proximal version, meaning 'for this [reason].' It uses the demonstrative هذا and is used interchangeably with لذلك.
- لذا (li-dha): A shortened, more concise version. Etymologically, ذا is the original demonstrative base; the 'ha' in هذا is actually a separate particle of attention (harf tanbih) that is omitted here.
- وبالتالي (wa-bi-tali): Meaning 'consequently' or 'and thus.' This is a core connector in journalism and formal academic writing to show a logical sequence.
Placement and Construction:
These connectors usually start the second sentence or clause. In modern punctuation, they are almost always preceded by a comma (،) if they appear mid-sentence, or they begin a new sentence entirely. They are often preceded by the coordinating conjunction و (wa) or the particle فـ (so/then) to create a smoother transition (e.g., ولذلك or فلهذا).
Grammatical Note:
These connectors are adverbial in nature. Unlike particles such as أن, they do not affect the case of following nouns or the mood of following verbs; the sentence following them remains grammatically independent.
Register Note:
These are strictly Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) terms. While regional dialects use different words, every educated speaker uses these in writing and formal speech to build fluency in logical argumentation.
Examples (4)
- كان الوقت متأخراً، لذلك قررنا العودة إلى المنزل.
It was late, therefore we decided to return home.
Word by Word: Was the time late, for that we decided the returning to the house.
Here, لذلك connects the cause (it being late) to the result (returning home).
- لم يدرس الطالب جيداً، لذا رسب في الامتحان.
The student did not study well, so he failed the exam.
Word by Word: Not he studied the student well, for this he failed in the exam.
لذا is used here as a concise way to show the consequence of not studying.
- الطقس بارد جداً اليوم، ولهذا سأبقى في البيت.
The weather is very cold today, and for this reason, I will stay at home.
Word by Word: The weather cold very today, and for this I will stay in the house.
لهذا (li-hadha) is the proximal version ('for this reason') and functions identically to لذلك.
- أريد أن أتعلم العربية، لذا أدرس كل يوم.
I want to learn Arabic, so I study every day.
Word by Word: I want that I learn the Arabic, for this I study every day.
لذا introduces the logical action taken to achieve the goal mentioned in the first clause.
Common Mistakes
Using both 'because' and 'therefore' in the same sentence.
لأن الجو ممطر، لذلك بقيت في البيت.الجو ممطر، لذلك بقيت في البيت.In Arabic, like English, it is redundant to use both 'because' (لأن) and 'therefore' (لذلك) to link the same two clauses. Choose one or the other.
Confusing 'لذا' with 'إذن'.
ستأتي غداً؟ لذا سأنتظرك.ستأتي غداً؟ إذن سأنتظرك.لذا is for cause-and-effect sequences. إذن is used for logical inferences or responses to what someone else just said ('In that case...').
Related Patterns
- لأنBecause
لأن (because) introduces the cause, whereas لذلك introduces the result.
Level 2 - ذلك / تلكThat (Far Things)
لذلك is a fixed masculine singular expression built using the distal demonstrative ذلك (that).
Level 1 - هذا / هذهThis (Near Things)
The connector لهذَا (for this reason) is built using the proximal demonstrative هذا.
Level 1 - و (العطف)And
The coordinating conjunction و (wa) is frequently attached to the front of these connectors, as seen in ولذلك and وبالتالي.
Level 1 - لماذاWhy
لماذا (why) asks for the reason that لذلك or وبالتالي provides.
Level 1 - مماWhich Is Why
Like مما, the connector وبالتالي is used to link a result to a preceding statement in formal prose.
