لأن
Because
لأنّ (li-anna) is the standard way to say 'because' in Modern Standard Arabic. It connects a result to its cause and must be followed by a noun or an attached pronoun.
How It Works
The particle لأنّ is a compound of the preposition li- (for) and the particle anna (that). In Arabic grammar, it is used to introduce a nominal sentence (jumla ismiyya).
Key rules for usage:
- Case Change: The noun immediately following لأنّ (the subject of the clause) must be in the accusative case. For example, in 'because the road is crowded,' 'the road' becomes al-tariqa (الطريقَ) instead of al-tariqu.
- The Predicate: The second part of the sentence (the news or description) remains in the nominative case.
- Attached Pronouns: If the reason refers to a person or thing already mentioned, you must use attached pronouns (e.g., لأنّه 'because he', لأنّها 'because she').
- First Person: For 'because I,' you can use either لأنّي (li-anni) or لأنّني (li-annani). Both are correct, though the latter is slightly more formal.
- No Direct Verbs: You cannot place a verb immediately after لأنّ. You must either use a noun or a pronoun first. If you want to say 'because I went,' you say لأنّني ذهبتُ (because-I I-went).
- The Preventive Ma: If the particle ما is attached to form لأنّما, its grammatical effect is cancelled. In this case, the following noun remains in the nominative case, and a verb can follow the particle directly.
Examples (4)
- تأخرتُ لأنَّ الطريقَ مزدحمٌ.
I was late because the road is crowded.
Word by Word: I-was-late because the-road (acc.) crowded (nom.).
Notice how 'the road' (الطريقَ) takes the fatha ending because it follows لأنّ.
- لم يحضرْ الاجتماعَ لأنَّهُ مريضٌ.
He did not attend the meeting because he is sick.
Word by Word: Not he-attended the-meeting because-he sick.
Here, the pronoun 'he' is attached directly to the particle as -hu (ـه).
- نحنُ نسكنُ هنا لأنَّ المدينةَ جميلةٌ.
We live here because the city is beautiful.
Word by Word: We we-live here because the-city (acc.) beautiful.
The noun 'the city' (المدينةَ) is in the accusative case.
- أريدُ أن أنامَ لأنني متعبٌ جداً.
I want to sleep because I am very tired.
Word by Word: I-want that I-sleep because-I tired very.
This uses the 'noon of protection' form (لأنني) for the first person singular.
Common Mistakes
Using a detached pronoun instead of an attached one.
لأن هو مريضلأنه مريضIn Arabic, you cannot place a detached pronoun like 'huwa' (he) after لأنّ. You must use the attached suffix '-hu'.
Placing a verb immediately after the particle.
غبتُ لأن مرضتُغبتُ لأنني مرضتُلأنّ must be followed by a noun or pronoun. If the reason is an action you did, you must insert the pronoun 'I' (لأنني) before the verb.
Confusing 'because' (conjunction) with 'because of' (prepositional phrase).
أنا متعب لأن المرضأنا متعب بسبب المرضلأنّ introduces a full sentence (noun + predicate). If you only want to follow with a single noun, use 'bi-sabab' (بسبب) instead.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand 'لأن' (because), a learner needs to know how to construct basic sentences that the particle will connect. Since 'لأن' often takes attached pronouns, familiarity with how pronouns attach to words is necessary. Finally, understanding the question word 'لماذا' provides the functional context for using 'لأن' to provide reasons.
