Emphasis by Repetition

Level 4

التوكيد اللفظي (at-tawkīd al-lafẓī) is the practice of repeating a word, phrase, or entire sentence to reinforce meaning, remove doubt, or ensure the listener knows you are speaking literally.

How It Works

Emphasis by Repetition is a powerful rhetorical tool in Modern Standard Arabic. It serves to confirm a fact and eliminate any possibility of misunderstanding (raf‘ al-shakk). Stylistically, repeating a word more than three times is generally considered poor style (ghayr fasīh).

1. Nouns and Verbs: You can repeat a noun or a verb directly. When a noun is repeated, the second noun acts as a 'follower' (tābi‘) and must match the case ending of the first.
Example: الكتابُ الكتابُ (The book, [I mean] the book).

2. Sentences: Entire sentences can be repeated to provide maximum emphasis. This applies to both the nominal and verbal sentence structures.
Example: فاز البطلُ، فاز البطلُ (The hero won, the hero won).

3. Particles:

  • Answer Particles: Words like نعم (yes) or لا (no) can be repeated alone for emphasis.
  • Non-answer Particles: This includes prepositions like في (in) and emphatic particles like إنّ (indeed). These cannot be repeated alone; you must repeat the particle along with the noun it governs. For example, you say إنّ زيداً إنّ زيداً, not إنّ إنّ زيداً.

4. Pronouns:

  • Attached Pronouns: To emphasize an attached pronoun, you repeat it using its detached (independent) form. Example: كتبتُ أنا (I wrote, [I] myself).
  • Detached Pronouns: To emphasize detached pronouns, you simply repeat the same detached form. Example: أنا أنا سأذهب (I, I will go).

5. Synonyms: Emphasis can also be achieved by repeating the meaning with a different word (e.g., جاء أتى - 'He came, he arrived').

Examples (5)

  1. نَعَمْ نَعَمْ، سَأَحْضُرُ فِي المَوْعِدِ.

Yes, yes, I will attend on time.

Word by Word: Yes yes, I will attend in the appointment.

Here, the answer particle 'yes' is repeated for strong confirmation.

  2. جَاءَ جَاءَ الحَقُّ.

    The truth has [certainly] come.

Word by Word: Came came the truth.

Repeating the verb 'came' emphasizes the certainty of the action.

  3. فِي التَّأَنِّي فِي التَّأَنِّي السَّلَامَةُ.

In deliberation, in deliberation, there is safety.

Word by Word: In the deliberation in the deliberation the safety.

Because 'in' is a preposition, the entire phrase must be repeated to provide emphasis.

  4. رَأَيْتُكَ أَنْتَ فِي المَكْتَبَةِ.

I saw you [yourself] in the library.

Word by Word: I saw you you in the library.

To emphasize the attached pronoun 'ka' (you), the detached pronoun 'anta' (you) is added.

  5. القُدْسُ عَرَبِيَّةٌ القُدْسُ عَرَبِيَّةٌ.

Jerusalem is Arab, Jerusalem is Arab.

Word by Word: The Jerusalem Arab the Jerusalem Arab.

An entire nominal sentence is repeated here for maximum rhetorical impact.

Common Mistakes

  • Repeating a preposition alone without its object.

    ذَهَبْتُ إِلَى إِلَى المَدْرَسَةِ.
    ذَهَبْتُ إِلَى المَدْرَسَةِ إِلَى المَدْرَسَةِ.

In Arabic, you cannot repeat a preposition by itself. You must repeat the entire prepositional phrase.

  • Repeating an attached pronoun by doubling the suffix.

    كَتَبْتُتُ الدَّرْسَ.
    كَتَبْتُ أَنَا الدَّرْسَ.

You cannot double an attached suffix. To emphasize 'I' in 'I wrote', you must add the detached pronoun 'ana'.

Learn This First

To understand verbal emphasis (التوكيد اللفظي), you need to know that it involves repeating a word exactly as it is. This requires a basic understanding of Arabic word types (nouns, verbs, and particles) and the concept of grammatical case (I'rab), as the repeated word must mirror the grammatical state of the first word.
