ما / ماذا
What
In Modern Standard Arabic, both ما (mā) and ماذا (mādhā) mean "what." The choice depends on whether the sentence contains a verb.
How It Works
Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) uses two main forms for "what" depending on the sentence structure and the nature of the question:
- ما (mā): This is primarily used in a nominal sentence when asking about a noun, such as a name or identity. For example: "What is your name?" or "What is this?"
- ماذا (mādhā): This is typically used in a verbal sentence. While it often functions as the direct object (e.g., "What are you eating?"), it can also be the subject of the verb. Additionally, it is used in nominal sentences when followed by a prepositional phrase, such as "What is there?" (ماذا هناك؟).
Morphological Note: When ما is preceded by a preposition, it is common in formal writing to drop its final alif (e.g., لِمَ, عَمَّ, بِمَ), though keeping the alif is sometimes seen. In contrast, ماذا always retains its alif, as in لماذا (why).
In modern formal writing, using ماذا before verbs is the standard practice to avoid confusion with the negative particle ما. Learning these distinctions will help you become confident with clear communication in MSA.
Examples (6)
- ما اسمُكَ؟
What is your name?
Word by Word: What name-your?
Uses ما because 'name' (اسم) is a noun, making this a nominal sentence.
- ماذا تَفْعَلُ؟
What are you doing?
Word by Word: What you-do?
Uses ماذا because it precedes the verb 'to do' (تفعل).
- ما هذا؟
What is this?
Word by Word: What this?
Uses ما with the demonstrative pronoun 'this' (هذا).
- ماذا قَرَأْتَ اليَوْمَ؟
What did you read today?
Word by Word: What you-read today?
Uses ماذا because it asks about the object of the verb 'to read' (قرأت).
- لِمَ فَعَلْتَ ذٰلِكَ؟
Why did you do that?
Word by Word: For-what you-did that?
Demonstrates the dropping of the alif from ما when preceded by the preposition لِ.
- ماذا حَدَثَ؟
What happened?
Word by Word: What happened?
Uses ماذا because 'happened' (حدث) is a verb.
Common Mistakes
Using ماذا with a noun.
ماذا اسمك؟ما اسمك؟ماذا is used mostly before verbs, as in ماذا كتبتَ؟. To ask the identity of a noun such as a name, use ما.
Treating ما كتبتَ؟ as an error.
Different Meaningما كتبتَ؟ماذا كتبتَ؟ما كتبتَ؟ is a normal question, as in ما فعلتَ؟. Without a question mark or context, it could also be heard as 'You did not write.' ماذا كتبتَ؟ is clear either way.
