A Command That Implies a Condition

Level 6

In formal Arabic, if you give a command (e.g., 'Study!') and follow it with a result (e.g., 'you will succeed'), the second verb takes the jussive mood (majzūm) even without a conditional particle like 'if'.

How It Works

The الجزم في جواب الطلب (Jussive in the Result of a Request) is a sophisticated feature of Modern Standard Arabic that allows for concise conditional meanings. Note that this specific mood distinction is strictly a feature of formal Arabic, as colloquial dialects do not utilize the jussive mood.

1. The Trigger (The Request):
The first part of the sentence must be a 'request' (Talab). This includes:

  • Imperatives (Commands): ادرسْ (Study).
  • Prohibitions: لا تقتربْ (Do not approach).
  • Supplication (Du'a): ربِّ انصرني أغلبْ (Lord, support me, I shall prevail).
  • Interrogation: أين بيتك أزُرْكَ؟ (Where is your house? I will visit you).
  • Wishes (Tamanni): ليت لي مالاً أتصدقْ (If only I had money, I would give charity).
  • Hope (Tarajji): لعلك تزورني أكرمْك (Perhaps you will visit me, and I will honor you).
  • Offer (Ard) and Urging (Tahdid): ألا تنزل عندنا تُصِبْ خيراً (Won't you stay with us and find goodness?).

2. The Result (The Jussive Verb):
The second verb must be in the jussive mood. This means sound verbs end in a sukun (تنجحْ), defective verbs drop their final weak letter, and the Five Verbs drop the nun.

3. The 'Fa' Rule and Meaning:
Crucially, there must be no فـ (fa) connecting the two parts. If you add a فـ, the verb becomes subjunctive. While the jussive is optional, choosing the indicative mood instead changes the meaning: the verb is no longer a conditional result but becomes a description of the subject or a new, independent statement.

4. The Hidden 'If' Theory:
Grammarians explain this by suggesting a hidden conditional particle 'in' (if). The sentence 'ادرسْ تنجحْ' is understood as 'ادرسْ، فإنْ تدرسْ تنجحْ'.

5. The Logical Condition Test:
For the jussive to be valid after a prohibition, the result must be a desirable outcome that logically follows from NOT doing the action. The sentence must pass the 'In' test: you must be able to place 'إن لا' (if not) before the first verb and maintain a logical meaning. For example, 'لا تقتربْ من الأسدِ تسلمْ' (Do not approach the lion, you will be safe) is valid because 'If you do NOT approach, you will be safe' is logical. However, 'لا تقتربْ من الأسدِ يأكلُك' must remain indicative because 'If you do NOT approach, it will eat you' is illogical.

Examples (6)

  1. ادرسْ تنجحْ

    Study, [and] you will succeed.

    Word by Word: Study you-succeed

The verb 'succeed' is in the jussive (ending in sukūn) because it is the result of the command 'study'.

  2. أحسنْ إلى الناس تستعبدْ قلوبهم

Be kind to people, and you will win over their hearts.

    Word by Word: Be-kind to the-people you-enslave hearts-their

A classic proverb where the jussive 'tasta'bid' follows the command 'ahsin'.

  3. لا تقتربْ من النار تسلمْ

Do not approach the fire, [and] you will be safe.

Word by Word: Do-not approach from the-fire you-be-safe

In this prohibition, 'taslam' is jussive because safety is the logical result of not approaching the fire.

  4. ليت لي مالاً أتصدقْ

If only I had money, I would give charity.

    Word by Word: If-only to-me money I-give-charity

The verb 'atassaddaq' is jussive because it follows the wish expressed by 'layta'.

  5. ربِّ انصرني أغلبْ

Lord, support me, I shall prevail.

Word by Word: Lord support-me I-prevail

The verb 'aghlib' is jussive because it is the result of a supplication (du'ā').

  6. تواضعْ للناس يحبوك

Be humble toward people, and they will love you.

    Word by Word: Be-humble to-the-people they-love-you

The verb 'yuhibbūka' has dropped the 'nūn' because it is in the jussive mood as a result of the command.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the indicative for a result that depends on the command.

    Different Meaningادرسْ تنجحُ
    ادرسْ تنجحْ

ادرسْ تنجحُ with the indicative is possible as a new statement, but it does not link the result to the command. The jussive تنجحْ gives the meaning "if you study, you will succeed".

  • Using the jussive for an undesirable result after a prohibition.

    لا تَدْنُ مِنَ الأَسَدِ يَأْكُلْكَ
    لا تَدْنُ مِنَ الأَسَدِ يَأْكُلُكَ

The jussive implies 'If you do NOT do X, then Y'. Since 'If you do NOT approach the lion, it eats you' is logically false, the jussive cannot be used; the indicative is used instead.

Learn This First

To understand 'الجزم بالطلب', you must first be comfortable with giving commands (الأمر) and the jussive mood (المضارع المجزوم), as the pattern involves a command followed by a jussive verb that acts as the result of a hidden 'if' clause.
