Sodanige means such (formal) before a noun: sodanige gevalle (such cases). As sodanig means as such.

How It Works

1. Before a noun: sodanige. In formal writing, sodanige replaces so 'n and sulke. It takes -e, as adjectives before nouns often do:

  • sodanige gevalle (such cases) = sulke gevalle
  • 'n sodanige versoek (such a request) = so 'n versoek

2. As sodanig. The phrase as sodanig means as such or in itself: Die plan is nie as sodanig sleg nie. (The plan is not bad as such.)

3. Sodanig ... dat. Without a noun, sodanig can mean such or to such an extent, followed by a dat clause, like so ... dat:

  • Die skade was sodanig dat die huis gesloop moes word. (The damage was such that the house had to be demolished.)
  • Hy is sodanig beseer dat hy nie kon loop nie. (He was so badly injured that he could not walk.)

4. Register. Sodanig belongs to reports, laws, official letters and news writing (see formal written Afrikaans). In conversation, use sulke and so 'n.

    The rule does not apply to such applications.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving off the -e before a noun.

    Sodanig gevalle kom selde voor.
    Sodanige gevalle kom selde voor.

    Before a noun, sodanig takes -e: sodanige gevalle, 'n sodanige versoek.

  • Adding -e when no noun follows.

    Die plan is nie as sodanige sleg nie.
    Die plan is nie as sodanig sleg nie.

    In as sodanig there is no noun after the word, so it has no -e.
