ons/julle/hulle
Subject Pronouns Plural
ons we / us · julle you (more than one) · hulle they / them. Ons woon in Kaapstad. Hulle praat Afrikaans.
How It Works
The three plural pronouns
- ons — we and us. Ons woon in Kaapstad. Kom saam met ons.
- julle — you, when you speak to two or more people you know well. Julle is laat!
- hulle — they and them, for people and also for things. Die skoene? Hulle is onder die bed.
No separate object form
English has we/us and they/them, but Afrikaans keeps one word: Hulle help ons (They help us), Ons help hulle (We help them). Compare the singular pronouns, which do change: Object Pronouns.
Choosing the right you
Say jy to one person you know well, julle to a group you know well, and u to one or more people you address politely.
