geen
No, Not Any: Geen
Put geen before a noun to say no or not any, and end the sentence with nie: Ek het geen geld nie. (I have no money.)
How It Works
1. Geen before a noun. Geen means no, not a or not any. It stands right in front of the noun (or its adjective):
- Ek het geen geld nie. (I have no money.)
- Daar is geen melk in die yskas nie. (There is no milk in the fridge.)
- Sy het geen goeie idee nie. (She has no good idea.)
2. A final nie is still needed. Geen counts as the first negative, so the sentence ends with nie, just like double negation. This is true even when geen starts the sentence: Geen kind mag hier swem nie. (No child may swim here.)
3. Geen or nie? Both are correct, and nie is very common in speech:
- Uncountable or plural nouns: Ek het geen geld nie = Ek het nie geld nie.
- One countable thing: Ek het geen kar nie = Ek het nie 'n kar nie.
Geen sounds a little firmer and is more usual in writing.
4. Without a noun. Geen needs a noun after it. On its own, say geeneen (none, not one) for things you can count, or niks (nothing) for an amount: Hoeveel kinders was daar? Geeneen. (How many children were there? None.) Hoeveel geld het jy? Niks. (How much money do you have? Nothing.) Signs and notices leave out nie: Geen toegang (No entry).
Tip: In relaxed speech you will also hear g'n, a short form of geen. For nothing and no one, use niks and niemand.

- Daar is geen melk in die yskas nie.

Word by Word: There is no milk in the ice-chest not.
- Ek het geen kar nie.
I don't have a car.
Word by Word: I have no car not.
Ek het nie 'n kar nie means the same thing.
- Geen kind mag hier swem nie.
No child may swim here.
Word by Word: No child may here swim not.
Even when geen comes first, the sentence ends with nie.
- Sy het geen idee nie.
She has no idea.
Word by Word: She has no idea not.
- Hoeveel kinders was daar? Geeneen.
How many children were there? None.
Word by Word: How-many children were there? None-one.
Geen needs a noun after it. On its own, none is geeneen.
Common Mistakes
Using nie and geen together before the same noun.
Ek het nie geen geld nie.Ek het geen geld nie.Geen already is the first negative. Use either geen or nie before the noun, then the final nie.
Leaving out the final nie in a full sentence.
Ek het geen tyd.Ek het geen tyd nie. When geen comes before a noun in a full sentence, the sentence still ends with nie.
Using geen before an adjective on its own.
Dit is geen goed nie.Dit is nie goed nie.Geen goes with a noun. To say that something is not good, use nie.
