voor

In Front of and Before

Level 2

Voor has two main meanings: in front of for places (voor die winkel) and before for time (voor sesuur).

How It Works

1. Place: in front of. Die bus stop voor die skool. (The bus stops in front of the school.) Sy staan voor my in die ry. (She's standing in front of me in the queue.)

2. Time: before. voor die ete (before the meal), voor Kersfees (before Christmas), Kom asseblief voor sesuur. (Please come before six.)

3. On the clock. Voor counts the minutes up to the hour: tien voor vier (ten to four), kwart voor twaalf (quarter to twelve) (see telling the time).

4. At the front. voor in means at the front of: Ek sit graag voor in die bus. (I like to sit at the front of the bus.)

5. Before a whole clause. When before starts a clause with its own subject and verb, use voordat, which sends the verb to the end: Was jou hande voordat jy eet. (Wash your hands before you eat.) In everyday Afrikaans, voor on its own is also used here: voor jy eet.

Watch out: for is vir, not voor: Dit is vir jou. (It's for you.) And ago is gelede: twee jaar gelede (two years ago).

Examples (6)

  1. Ons ontmoet mekaar voor die winkel.

  2. Ek moet voor sesuur by die huis wees.

I have to be home before six.

Word by Word: I must before six-o'clock at the house be.

Here voor is about time: before six o'clock.

  3. Dit is tien voor vier.

    It's ten to four.

Word by Word: It is ten before four.

On the clock, voor counts the minutes up to the hour.

  6. Die kar staan voor die hek.

Common Mistakes

  • Using voor for ago.

Ek het hom twee jaar voor gesien.
Ek het hom twee jaar gelede gesien.

English before can mean ago, but Afrikaans voor cannot. Ago is gelede, placed after the time.

  • Using voor for for.

    Hierdie geskenk is voor jou.
    Hierdie geskenk is vir jou.

Voor looks like Dutch voor (for), but in Afrikaans the word for for is vir.
