A Slovak noun changes its ending depending on its job in the sentence, so one word can turn up in several forms. Žena means "a woman", and the same word also appears as ženy, žene, ženu, and ženou. A table of endings shows every form at once. Spotting them quickly while you read comes from meeting them in many sentences you already follow. Comprehensible input is Slovak like that: you mostly understand it, so the meaning around each ending tells you what it's doing.
What Comprehensible Input Looks Like
Every row in the picture is one Slovak sentence, and every bar is a word in it. You already know the gray ones, and the purple bar is the new word.
About one unfamiliar word per sentence, while you still follow the meaning.
When you know the rest of the sentence, it tells you what the new word means, or which ending a known word has picked up. Early on, that means short sentences about things you can point to. Later, a full news article gives you enough context to work out a word yourself. If most sentences lose you, go back to slower stories for a while.
Your Roadmap by Level
Bubblegum names its six levels with sentences a learner might say about their reading. Pick the nearest one, and treat the videos and podcasts as a rough fit, since they don't use these levels.
- Level 1
I'm just starting out or know only a few words
Watch Learn Slovak with Stories. Learners say the teacher speaks slowly and draws what she describes. Then try the sentences further down this page.
Learn Slovak with Stories - Level 2
I can read simple sentences.
Comenius University's free e-Slovak site has Katherine in Slovakia, a video series for beginners. Watch an episode twice, the second time without pausing.
e-Slovak - Level 3
I can read short stories and messages.
Comprehensible Slovak on YouTube has short stories for A1 and A2 learners. Pick one you can follow from start to finish.
Comprehensible Slovak - Level 4
I can read longer texts about everyday life.
Robert reads simple Slovak stories slowly and clearly, and marks each episode with a level. Choose a B1 episode and listen to the whole story.
Learn Slovak Through Stories with Robert - Level 5
I can follow complex topics, but miss some details.
The Comprehensible Slovak podcast retells news in easy Slovak for B1 and B2 learners, with a transcript for every episode. Its episodes stopped in 2025, so the archive is what's there.
Comprehensible Slovak podcast - Level 6
I can follow detailed arguments and different writing styles.
Read short articles in Správy STVR, the public broadcaster's free news app. Set two reports on the same event side by side, and notice how each one tells it.
Správy STVR
Try the next row once the current one goes smoothly, and step back a row if most sentences need the dictionary.
Try It on a Sentence
Here are two simple sentences. To je žena means "That's a woman." In Vidím ženu, you already know žena, so the -u ending is the only new part, and the scene tells you it marks the person you see.
Bubblegum is a language app where your AI tutor, Poppy, writes Slovak lessons at your level on topics you choose. Each comes with AI audio, a dictionary, and her grammar help, and Regenerative Review™ brings saved words back in later lessons.
Frequently Asked Questions About Comprehensible Input
Should I Memorize the Case Tables First?
You can skip that step. Read sentences you understand, and look at a table when the same ending keeps puzzling you. The table makes more sense once you've seen the forms in context.
How Much Time Should I Set Aside?
Three to five hours a week works for Slovak, in sittings of 15–30 minutes or more. Most of it can go to reading and listening, with a little for talking with a tutor or a friend.
Which App Should a Beginner Choose?
If you are serious about learning Slovak, start with Bubblegum. Poppy writes lessons at your level about things you like. For apps that help with Slovak you choose yourself, see our Slovak input comparison.
Is Bubblegum Free?
Yes. The lesson library is free for everyone, because we believe everyone should be able to learn. It holds lessons that other learners asked Poppy for. A new custom lesson costs us real money to make, so your first one is free, and Bubblegum Pro gives you unlimited custom lessons.
