People in Hong Kong speak Cantonese, but newspapers there print formal written Chinese. The two use different words for everyday ideas: "is" is 係 in speech and 是 in the paper, and "not" is 唔 in speech and 不 in the paper. Name spoken Cantonese in your prompt and list a few of those words, and ChatGPT will write the way people talk.
Which ChatGPT Prompts Work for Cantonese?
Read a Chat in Spoken Cantonese
A message thread between friends is short, and it's written the way people talk. Ask for the Jyutping of each new word, since the characters don't show the sound.
I'm learning Cantonese as it's spoken in Hong Kong. I can read short sentences about food and family. Write a WhatsApp chat between two friends about planning a hike on Sunday, 8 messages long. Write it the way people talk, in Traditional characters, using spoken words like 係, 唔, 佢, and 嘅. Use these words too: 行山、天氣、帶. After the chat, list each new word with its Jyutping, tone numbers included, and its meaning in English.
Ask About 咗 and the Little Words at the End
Cantonese puts a small word after a verb to show when the action happens, as in 我食咗飯 (I've eaten), where 咗 means it's done. More small words at the end of a sentence show how the speaker feels.
Look at this Cantonese sentence: "我啱啱食咗飯喇。" For each small word after a verb, like 咗, 緊, or 過, tell me what it adds. Then tell me what the word at the very end of the sentence says about the speaker's mood. Write two more lines that use the same little words. Keep the whole answer short enough to read on a phone.
Order at a Hong Kong Diner
A 茶餐廳 is a Hong Kong diner. There, you can ask for a cold drink 走冰, which means no ice cubes, or 少甜, which means less sweet. Those short, fixed lines make it a good first role-play.
Let's role-play in spoken Cantonese. You take orders at a 茶餐廳 in Hong Kong, and I want a pineapple bun and a lemon tea. Use the quick, short lines staff there use, and stop after each one so I can answer. Ask whether I want my drink hot or iced, and how sweet. If I use a Mandarin word, carry on, and at the end give me the Cantonese word I could have used.
To try it out loud, open ChatGPT Voice and start by asking it to speak Cantonese with you. OpenAI's Voice page says you can ask ChatGPT during a conversation to speak a different language.
Check Your Cantonese Characters
When you type Cantonese, it's easy to write 是 where you'd say 係, or to choose a character that only sounds like the one you meant.
Here's a message I wrote in Cantonese: "Paste what you wrote here" Mark every word that is written Chinese rather than spoken Cantonese, and give me the spoken word. Mark any character I chose because it sounds like the right one. Number the fixes, and for each one show my word, the right word, and a short reason in English.

How Do You Check ChatGPT's Cantonese?
A Mandarin word can look fine on the page and still sound strange in Hong Kong, so check that people there really say each new word, and check its tone.
- Look It Up in words.hkwords.hk is a free Cantonese dictionary written by its users, based on Hong Kong speech. Its entries give English meanings and example sentences with Jyutping.
- Match the Tone NumberJyutping marks the tone of each syllable with a number from 1 to 6. If the number ChatGPT gave doesn't match the one in words.hk, go with words.hk.
- Zoom In on Menu PhotosTake the photo up close, so the characters fill the picture, but keep the whole line in it. OpenAI's image FAQ says ChatGPT reads non-Latin scripts less well, and that larger text helps.
- Spoken or Only in Print?Ask ChatGPT if people say a new word out loud or you'd only see it in print. Then see how words.hk uses it in its example sentences.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I Need Jyutping for These Prompts?
Yes, if you want to say the words out loud. A Chinese character doesn't show its sound, so every prompt here asks ChatGPT for Jyutping. You can hear every sound and all six tones in the Jyutping course.
Should I Learn Written Chinese Too?
Learn the written form later, if you plan to read Hong Kong news or work there. Newspapers and forms use written Chinese, and people read it aloud with Cantonese sounds. Start with spoken Cantonese, since it's what you'll hear.
Which App Should a Cantonese Beginner Choose?
