Arabic speakers read one kind of Arabic and speak another at home. Modern Standard Arabic is the one in news and books all over the Arab world. At home, people in Cairo speak Egyptian Arabic, and people in Casablanca speak Moroccan Arabic. Even "I want" changes: it's أريد in Modern Standard Arabic, عايز in Cairo, and بغيت in Casablanca. Name the kind you're learning at the top of every prompt.
Which ChatGPT Prompts Work for Arabic?
Read with the Short Vowels Marked
Most Arabic text leaves out the marks for short vowels, so you can't always tell how a new word sounds. Ask for the marks on new words only, so the rest of the text looks the way Arabic normally does.
I'm learning Egyptian Arabic. I read Arabic script, and I can follow short sentences about my day. Write 6 sentences in Egyptian Arabic about a day at the beach in Alexandria, in Arabic script. Use these words: بحر، شمسية، موجة. Add the short vowel marks to every new word, and write the other words without them. Then give me the new words in a short table, each with its marks and its English meaning.
Ask About the Root
Most Arabic words grow from a root of three letters. ك ت ب is about writing, and it gives you كتاب (book), مكتب (office), and كاتب (writer). Many dictionaries list words under their root, so ask ChatGPT for it.
Here's an Arabic word: "مدرسة" Tell me its three-letter root and what the root is about. Give me four other common words from the same root, with their English meanings, and show the pattern that turns the root into each word. Make it a short list I can copy into my notes.
Order at a Café
Ordering at a café uses the same few lines again and again, so it's an easy place to practice a spoken kind of Arabic. Name the city, and ChatGPT plays a waiter from there. If you're learning Modern Standard Arabic, use the reading prompt instead, since people don't order coffee in it.
Let's role-play in Egyptian Arabic. I'm sitting down at a café in Cairo to order a mint tea and something sweet, and you're the waiter. Answer the way people there talk, in Arabic script, and give me one line per turn. If I use a word from a different kind of Arabic, carry on. After six turns, show me how someone from Cairo would say my lines.
Check Your Spelling and Grammar
Some Arabic letters look alike at the end of a word, like ة and ه, or ى and ي, and the hamza can sit on different letters. The prompt below looks at those first, then at the grammar.
Check this text I wrote in Egyptian Arabic: "Paste what you wrote here" Look at my spelling first, especially ة and ه, ى and ي, and where each hamza sits. Then check the grammar. Give me the corrected text, followed by a short list of what you changed and why, in English.
For a longer story at your level, set our story prompt to the Arabic you're learning.
How Do You Check ChatGPT's Arabic?
Look up each new word, and check which kind of Arabic it belongs to. "Now" is الآن in the news, دلوقتي in Cairo, and دابا in Casablanca.
- Search by Root in Living ArabicLiving Arabic has Arabic-English dictionaries for standard Arabic (فصحى) and for spoken kinds like Egyptian. You can search by Arabic word, English word, or root.
- Compare the Vowel MarksCheck the marks ChatGPT added against the dictionary. The same three letters can be different words, like كَتَبَ (he wrote) and كُتُب (books), and only the marks show which one it is.
- Ask What Breaks the RuleOpenAI's help page says ChatGPT can oversimplify. When it gives you a plural rule, ask for words that break it, since many plurals change inside the word, like كِتَاب (book) and كُتُب (books).
- Give Each Kind Its Own ProjectIf you study two kinds of Arabic, make a ChatGPT project for each, with its own instructions. OpenAI says a project's instructions override your general custom instructions.
