Javanese isn't on Duolingo. We read every course on Duolingo's own list on October 14, 2026, and none of them teaches Javanese.
Indonesian is on Duolingo, but it's a different language from Javanese. The apps below teach Javanese itself, grouped as a game course, conversation lessons, and word games. For tutors, exchange partners, and Javanese magazines, see our best apps to learn Javanese.
Custom Lessons Made for You
Bubblegum
For serious learners, Bubblegum is the best app to learn Javanese. You learn from Javanese you can mostly understand, which is called comprehensible input.
Bubblegum's Javanese lessons are written by Poppy, your AI tutor. For a Lebaran visit to Yogyakarta, she can write a chat with relatives as you arrive, and you can ask her about any word.
Bubblegum has no Javanese teacher to talk with. For speaking, and for help choosing polite words, see the tutors in our full Javanese comparison.
- Poppy fits your Javanese lessons to your level and the subjects you choose.
- Pick up Javanese news and stories whenever you have a minute.
- Ask Poppy about a word, and she'll explain how it's used.
- Regenerative Review™ brings saved Javanese words back as you read.
- Clear, expressive AI voices read every lesson aloud, with a different voice for each speaker.
- There's no way to add your own books or articles.
- A new custom lesson costs us real money to make, so your first one is free, and Bubblegum Pro gives you unlimited custom lessons. The lesson library is free for everyone, because we believe everyone should be able to learn.

Common Questions
Which Javanese app should a beginner choose?
If you are serious about learning Javanese, start with Bubblegum. Poppy writes lessons at your level about things you like. Or start with Ling if you want game lessons in order, or Mango if you'd like to learn through conversations.
Is Javanese the same as Indonesian?
No. uTalk's Javanese page says they are separate languages, and a speaker of one can't follow the other, even though they share some words. Javanese is spoken mainly on Java, and many Javanese speakers also speak Indonesian.
Is Bubblegum free?
Yes. The lesson library is free for everyone, because we believe everyone should be able to learn. It holds lessons that other learners asked Poppy for. A new custom lesson costs us real money to make, so your first one is free, and Bubblegum Pro gives you unlimited custom lessons.
