Stories, audio, and videos can all help you learn Javanese when you can follow what they mean. That is the idea behind comprehensible input: learning from Javanese you can mostly understand. A 2025 report from Universitas Gadjah Mada says Javanese has more than 80 million speakers, but people use it mostly in families and traditional communities. A reply in Reddit's Javanese community adds that there are not many modern novels written in Javanese.
These apps and sites give you Javanese at your level, or help you follow the Javanese you pick yourself. For courses, speaking practice, and tutors, see our Javanese app comparison.
Custom Lessons Made for You
Bubblegum
Learn Javanese with a path made just for you. Start with your level, what you like, and why you want to learn. Your path grows as you learn, with new lessons that fit you. Bubblegum also has news and stories, so you can read and listen to a mix of Javanese about music, food, family, or everyday life.
Poppy, your AI tutor, writes each lesson for your level and goals. If a sentence is hard to follow, just ask her to explain the words or the grammar.
The trade-off is that Bubblegum can't help you read Javanese you found yourself. For a magazine story or a web page you already picked, Readlang is the better fit.
- Read and listen to lessons, news, and stories about things you like.
- New lessons fit your level, interests, and goals.
- Regenerative Review™ brings saved words back in new lessons, so you review them by reading instead of using flashcards.
- Ask Poppy for help as you read.
- Lesson audio uses AI voices, not recordings of Javanese speakers.
- You cannot bring in your own books, articles, or videos.
- A new custom lesson costs us real money to make, so you can ask Poppy for a free one, and Bubblegum Pro gives you unlimited custom lessons. The lesson library is free for everyone, because we believe everyone should be able to learn.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to learn Indonesian first?
No, but it helps. Javanese and Indonesian use different words for many everyday things, such as sega for rice, which is nasi in Indonesian. Many Javanese lessons made in Indonesia teach through Indonesian, so knowing some Indonesian opens up more of them.
Are there Javanese films I can watch?
Yes. Tilik is a 2018 short film in Javanese, free on Ravacana Films' YouTube channel with English subtitles, and a Javanese speaker on Reddit recommends it for natural Yogyakarta Javanese. For East Javanese, someone on Reddit suggests Bayu Skak's films, such as Yowis Ben, a 2018 comedy that is mostly in Javanese.
Does Javanese sound the same everywhere?
No. A learner on Reddit notes that many learning materials teach the Javanese of Solo and Yogyakarta. People in Surabaya and Malang speak East Javanese, and Banyumas has its own dialect, often called ngapak. Panjebar Semangat has columns in both Surabaya and Banyumas Javanese.
Is Bubblegum free?
Yes. The lesson library is free for everyone, because we believe everyone should be able to learn. It holds lessons that other learners asked Poppy for. A new custom lesson costs us real money to make, so you can ask Poppy for a free one, and Bubblegum Pro gives you unlimited custom lessons.
