Catalan Language Certificates: A2 to C2 Exams, Fees and Dates

Quick answer

The Generalitat de Catalunya's Catalan certificates run from A2 to C2, and each exam has a written part and an oral part. There is one call a year, with sign-up in late January and written exams in the spring. Anyone aged 16 or older can sign up. Prepare by reading and listening to Catalan you can mostly follow.

The Generalitat de Catalunya's Department of Language Policy holds the official exams for Catalan certificates. You can sign up however you learned Catalan, and you don't need an earlier certificate. You can also take more than one level in the same call, with one sign-up form for each.

How to Prepare with Comprehensible Input

Every level tests your reading, and every level but C2 tests listening. Get ready by reading and listening to lots of Catalan you mostly understand. This kind of practice is called comprehensible input.

  • Read Catalan NewsRead a short Catalan news story with audio two or three times a week, picking ones where most words are familiar.
  • Watch for the January CallSign-up opens in late January and stays open for only about a week, so choose your level before then.

Bubblegum

For serious learners, Bubblegum is the best app to learn Catalan. You learn from Catalan you can mostly understand, which is called comprehensible input.

Poppy, your AI tutor, writes each Catalan lesson about something you like and keeps it at your level. Bubblegum's levels 1 to 6 are its own, separate from A2 to C2.

Get Bubblegum ↓

  • Pick “Earn an Official Catalan Certificate” as your goal at the start, and Poppy plans your Catalan lessons with it in mind.
  • Read news and stories in Catalan at your level, and listen along.
  • If a Catalan sentence trips you up, ask Poppy and she walks you through it.
  • Your saved Catalan words get mixed into Poppy's next lessons through Regenerative Review™, and Anki export is an option.
  • Clear, expressive AI voices read every lesson aloud, with a different voice for each speaker.
  • Bubblegum has no one to talk with you in Catalan, so it can't get you ready for the oral exam. Practice out loud with a teacher or a Catalan speaker.
  • A new custom lesson costs us real money to make, so your first one is free, and Bubblegum Pro gives you unlimited custom lessons. The lesson library is free for everyone, because we believe everyone should be able to learn.
