The best way to learn Guarani depends on why you are learning it. A visitor planning a trip to Paraguay and a reader of Guarani poetry need different things. For both, most of your time goes to reading and listening to Guarani you can follow, which is called comprehensible input. The rest goes to review and some real conversation.
Bubblegum covers the reading and listening part. Poppy, your AI tutor, writes Guarani lessons at your level about things you like, with audio, word meanings, and grammar topics on the same page. Regenerative Review™ brings the words you save back in new lessons. Add a course or a tutor for speaking and feedback.
| Method | What it builds | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Reading and listening at your level | Words and listening | Most of your time |
| A structured course | An order for the basics | Your first months |
| A tutor or a course in Paraguay | Speaking and quick replies | Using what you know |
| Flashcards or other review | Remembering words | A few minutes each session |
| News, TV and poetry | Guarani as Paraguayans write and say it | Fun, once you follow most of it |
| Grammar study | How a word is built from its parts | Patterns that confuse you |
A 2016 review of 49 studies in Reading in a Foreign Language, a University of Hawaii journal, found that people learning English read better after reading a lot of easy material.
To check the level, read a few sentences. If most have about one new word, keep reading. If you can't tell what's happening, pick something easier.
For every goal, most of your time goes to reading and listening. Spend the rest on the skill your goal needs most.
- Visit ParaguayLearn a few greetings, such as Mbaʼéichapa? (How are you?) and Aguyje (thank you). Paraguayans tend to speak Spanish to visitors, so begin in Guarani yourself.
- Talk With Paraguayan Family or FriendsIn Paraguay, 38.6 percent of people aged 5 and over use Guarani and Spanish together at home, so expect both in one conversation. Learn the everyday words first, and the Spanish words people mix in will start to make sense.
- Live or Work in ParaguayGuarani and Spanish are both official languages there. Read Agencia IP's Guarani news, and ask a language school in Paraguay about courses, since Bruno Estigarribia, who wrote a free reference grammar of Paraguayan Guarani, lists Ateneo de Lengua y Cultura Guarani, El Granel, IDIPAR and CELPE as places that teach Guarani to foreigners.
- Read Poetry and BooksStart with the free Oremba'e library, which has more than 14,000 poems. Susy Delgado also translated Juan Rulfo's novel Pedro Páramo into Guarani. ABC Color reported in 2024 that printed copies would go to public libraries in Paraguay, so ask a Paraguayan library or bookshop whether you can get one.
- Study the Language ItselfEstigarribia's A Grammar of Paraguayan Guarani is free to download from UCL Press. Read a section when a pattern in your lessons puzzles you.
- Follow a Free Course at HomeThe Peace Corps wrote the Guarani Basic Course, and both parts are free PDFs. Work through one unit at a time, reading the dialogues with their English translations.
To see how many hours each stage takes, read how long it takes to learn Guarani.
Most parts have a free option, such as the Peace Corps course or the Academy's dictionary, and an app or service for when you want more.

- Taking Every Long Word ApartLearn a form like oñembohasa (it was translated) as a whole when you first meet it, as Estigarribia advises, and look at its parts later.
- Lists With No SentencesLearn each word inside a sentence you read and hear, and save the whole sentence.
- Treating Spanish Words as MistakesParaguayans use many Spanish words when they speak Guarani, and the Spanish words for numbers above four are common in speech. Learn the words people actually say.
Bubblegum
For serious learners, Bubblegum is the best app to learn Guarani. You learn from Guarani you can mostly understand, which is called comprehensible input.
- Every lesson is written at your level, about things you like.
- Lessons come with audio, so you hear a line as you read it.
- Tap a word to see what it means and the parts it is built from, such as the person marker at the start of a verb.
- Grammar topics with examples explain how Guarani works.
- Regenerative Review™ brings saved words back in new lessons, and you can export them to Anki as flashcards.
- Clear, expressive AI voices read every lesson aloud, with a different voice for each speaker.
- You can't turn your own Guarani books or articles into lessons. However, you can paste a page into the chat, and Poppy will explain it.
- Lessons use everyday Paraguayan Guarani, with the Spanish words Paraguayans use when they speak it, such as numbers above four. Formal written Guarani comes in at Levels 5 and 6, so a school book or a newspaper may use other words.
- Custom lessons cost us money to make, so you need Bubblegum Pro for unlimited custom lessons. Lessons Poppy wrote for other learners are free for everyone to read.

Is it better to learn Guarani with an app or a teacher?
Use an app for the hours of reading and listening, and a teacher for speaking and corrections. Estigarribia writes that most Guarani speakers live in Paraguay or Argentina, so a local conversation partner may be hard to find. A tutor or a course gives you steady speaking practice.
Should I learn Guarani grammar first?
No. Learn grammar from the Guarani you read and hear, and look a pattern up when it confuses you. The word oñembohasa (it was translated) has several parts, and Estigarribia suggests learning it whole before you take it apart.
Should I learn Guarani or Jopara?
Jopara is the name for speech that mixes Guarani and Spanish, and Estigarribia writes that it is what you will most likely hear outside formal settings. Bubblegum teaches everyday Paraguayan Guarani, with the Spanish words Paraguayans use when they speak it, and it brings in formal written Guarani at Levels 5 and 6.
Which Guarani app should a beginner choose?
If you are serious about learning Guarani, start with Bubblegum. Poppy, your AI tutor, writes lessons at your level about things you like. Our Guarani app comparison covers courses and dictionaries too.
Is Bubblegum free?
Yes. Lessons Poppy wrote for other learners are free for everyone to read. Custom lessons cost us money to make, so you need Bubblegum Pro for unlimited custom lessons.
